Emmanuel Church

Inclusive Spirit & Historical Resonance

Built in 1902, Emmanuel Church is an Episcopal congregation located in Newport, Rhode Island, a historic seaport city of 25,000 residents at the southern tip of Aquidneck Island, the largest island in Narragansett Bay.

The church was designed by the noted church architect Ralph Adams Cram with the interior designed by Bertrand Grosvenor Goodhue, the church includes a limestone altar, carved wooden choir stalls, striking stained glass windows, monumental murals in the Art Nouveau style and an ornate oak reredos. The church comfortably seats 300 people. Valet parking is available. Emmanuel Church, one of Newport’s architectural treasures, is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Connected to the church is the exquisite All Saints Chapel, beautifully restored in 1983. It seats 52 people and is ideal for small weddings and renewal ceremonies, or as a pre-wedding gathering place for groomsmen and others in the bridal party.

We are honored by your interest in celebrating your marriage here at Emmanuel Church. We hope that the marriage service will add to the joy of your wedding and help make your marriage a living symbol of the union between Christ and his Church.

The first step in considering a wedding at Emmanuel is to make an initial appointment with the Rector where she will review with you the requirements of the Episcopal Church, in particular:

  • At least one person of the couple is a baptized Christian.

  • If either or both of the parties to the marriage have been previously married and the marriage has ended in divorce, permission must be obtained from the Bishop of the Diocese of Rhode Island.

  • Completion of the Declaration of Intention for Holy Matrimony form to declare that marriage is a lifelong union.
